You found a tool that says 29 dollars a month. Then the first invoice arrived and it said something else. That gap is not a scam, it is how the category prices: the plan is the entry ticket, and the automation, the people, the contacts and the WhatsApp messages are each metered on their own line.

AI customer service usually costs far more than its headline plan. On 12 vendor pages checked on 3 October 2026, the advertised plan ran from about 10 to 280 US dollars a month, but the AI itself was often billed separately, at 0.90 to 2.00 US dollars per automated conversation or resolution. On top of that come seats, contact or ticket overages, and Meta's WhatsApp template fees, which vary by country. To compare vendors honestly, add every line for your real monthly volume. plumcut takes the other route: a one time setup fee, then a fixed monthly fee in wide bands with a ceiling, with Meta and AI usage passed through at cost.

The six lines behind every AI customer service bill

Almost every invoice in this category is built from the same six parts. Vendors differ in which ones they show on the pricing page.

LineWhat it charges forWhere you will see it
1. Plan or seatAccess, usually per person who logs inEvery helpdesk
2. AutomationEach conversation or resolution the AI closesIntercom, Zendesk, Gorgias, Tidio, Interakt
3. OverageTickets or monthly active contacts above the plan limitGorgias, respond.io, SleekFlow
4. Meta's message feesWhatsApp template messages, priced by countryEveryone on WhatsApp, passed through
5. Provider fees on messages or numbersA per message fee, a licence or a number hosting feeTwilio, 360dialog, SleekFlow
6. Your team's timeBuilding flows, writing answers, fixing what breaksNever on the invoice

The sixth line is the one that decides whether a cheap tool stays cheap. A self serve platform at 50 dollars a month that needs a person half a day a week to maintain it is not a 50 dollar product.

What 12 vendors actually charge, checked on 3 October 2026

plumcut sells in this category, so this is a comparison written by a participant. Every figure below comes from the vendor's own pricing or documentation page on 3 October 2026, follows the same six lines, and links to the page so you can check it. Prices change. Pull the current number before you budget; the structure is the part that lasts. Where a page did not state something, the table says not stated.

Three patterns stand out once the lines sit side by side.

The AI is usually a second product. Intercom, Zendesk, Gorgias, Tidio and Interakt all price the automation separately from the plan. The plan buys you an inbox. The thing you came for is metered.

Contacts are a growth tax. respond.io and SleekFlow bill by monthly active contacts. Talk to more customers, which is the goal, and the bill climbs with you.

Message fees hide in the plumbing. Twilio's half cent per message looks small until you multiply it by every inbound and outbound message in a month. 360dialog is the opposite case: it states no markup on Meta's fees and charges a flat licence instead. Ask every provider which of those two models it follows.

Meta's fees, and why your market matters

Meta moved WhatsApp to per message pricing on 1 July 2025. Its documentation says all non-template messages are free, and utility templates sent inside an open customer service window are free too. What you pay for are template messages: marketing, utility outside the window, and authentication.

The rate depends on the recipient's country calling code, and the region is split in a way that matters for anyone selling across it. Saudi Arabia (966) and the United Arab Emirates (971) are listed as their own markets. Lebanon (961) sits in a grouping called Rest of Middle East. A brand messaging customers in Beirut, Riyadh and Dubai is paying three different rate lines, and a vendor quote that uses one blended number is guessing. We broke the categories down in what the WhatsApp Business API really costs.

The same store, priced three ways

An illustrative calculation, not a customer result. A store with two people on the inbox and 600 conversations a month that the AI closes on its own. Annual billing prices from the table above. Meta fees left out because they are the same everywhere.

VendorSeatsAutomationOverageMonthly total before Meta fees
Intercom, Advanced at 85 per seat170600 × 0.99 = 594noneabout 764 US dollars
Zendesk, Suite Team at 55 per agent11010 included, 590 × 1.50 = 885noneabout 995 US dollars
Gorgias, Basic at 50 with 300 tickets50600 × 0.90 = 5401,500 tickets means 1,200 × 0.40 = 480about 1,070 US dollars

Now double the traffic, which is what a good season does. Every one of those totals rises, because three of the six lines are metered. That is the real cost question: not what you pay this month, but what your bill does when you succeed. We compared that effect across ten platforms in AI customer service for retail.

Why plumcut prices the opposite way

plumcut does not sell you an inbox and a meter. It builds plum, the AI that answers, sells and books on your WhatsApp, connects it to your store and systems, and runs it for you. The pricing follows from that.

  • One setup fee, stated up front. It pays for learning your brand, building plum around your products and policies, testing it on real questions and launching. It is live in about two weeks.
  • One fixed monthly fee. Set by what your solution does, not by how many conversations it handles. It steps up in wide bands as traffic settles higher, the top band is a ceiling, and you are told before a band changes.
  • Meta and AI usage at cost. The two costs that genuinely scale with volume are billed to you at cost with no margin added. No per message fee on top, no per resolution charge, no contact tax.
  • No line six. There is nobody on your side writing flows or fixing answers. That work is the service.
  • Arabic and English, built in. No add-on for the language most of your customers write in.

Line by line, that removes the seat charge, the automation meter, the overage and the hidden staff time, and leaves you two numbers: a fixed fee and Meta's own rates.

When a metered tool is the better buy

Plainly, because a comparison that never says this is an advert. If your volume is very low or very uneven, a per resolution tool like Gorgias or Intercom can cost less than any fixed fee, since a quiet month costs almost nothing. If you already run a trained support team on Zendesk, adding its automation is less disruptive than switching. And if you want to build and own every flow yourself, a self serve platform like respond.io or Wati is the right shape. If none of those describes you, and you would rather have one predictable number and nobody on your team maintaining a bot, see how plumcut works.

What to do this week

  1. Pull last month's numbers: conversations, people on the inbox, unique customers who messaged, and how many template messages you sent per country.
  2. For each vendor you are considering, fill in all six lines from the table, not just line one.
  3. Run the same sum at double your volume. The vendor whose total moves least is the one built for a growing brand.
  4. Then ask plum for a fixed quote and compare it with the six line total, not with the headline plan.

Questions people also ask

How much does AI customer service cost per month?

The advertised plan is usually between 10 and 280 US dollars a month, but that is rarely the bill. On vendor pricing pages checked on 3 October 2026, the AI part is often charged separately, at 0.90 to 1.00 US dollars per automated interaction at Gorgias, 0.99 US dollars per outcome at Intercom, and 1.50 to 2.00 US dollars per extra automated resolution at Zendesk. Seats, contact overages and Meta's WhatsApp message fees come on top. A store automating a few hundred conversations a month should budget for the total of all of those, not for the plan price.

What are the hidden costs of an AI chatbot?

Six lines that the headline price usually leaves out. Per seat charges for the people who still answer. A per resolution or per AI conversation charge for the automation itself. Overage fees when tickets or monthly active contacts pass the plan limit. Meta's WhatsApp template message fees, plus any per message fee a provider adds, such as Twilio's 0.005 US dollars. Add-ons like integrations or extra numbers. And the staff time needed to build, test and maintain the automation, which no invoice shows.

Are WhatsApp replies to customers free?

Mostly yes. Since 1 July 2025 Meta charges per template message, and its pricing documentation says all non-template messages are free, which covers ordinary replies inside the customer service window. Utility templates sent inside an open customer service window are also free. Marketing, authentication and utility templates sent outside that window are charged, and the rate depends on the recipient's country calling code.

Does Meta charge the same WhatsApp rate in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the UAE?

No. Meta's rate card prices by the recipient's country calling code. Its pricing documentation lists Saudi Arabia (966) and the United Arab Emirates (971) as their own markets, while Lebanon (961) falls into a grouping called Rest of Middle East. A brand selling across all three should budget per market rather than use one blended rate.

Is a fixed monthly fee better than per resolution pricing?

It depends on your volume. Per resolution pricing is cheaper when traffic is low or very uneven, because a quiet month costs little. A fixed fee is cheaper and easier to plan when you are growing, because a busy month does not raise the bill. plumcut charges a one time setup fee and a fixed monthly fee in wide traffic bands with a ceiling, and passes Meta messaging and AI model usage through at cost with no margin.
