Messages are piling up, replies are going out late, and the obvious fix is to hire someone. Before you post the job ad, run the numbers properly, because the cost of a customer service hire is not the salary on the offer letter, and one hire does not cover the hours your customers are actually messaging.

For repetitive customer questions, an AI chatbot is almost always cheaper than hiring. A week has 168 hours, and the labour laws of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Lebanon cap a standard working week at 48 hours, so keeping one seat filled around the clock takes about three and a half people before anyone takes leave. Each hire then adds employer costs: social insurance, an end of service payment, paid leave and recruitment. An AI like plum answers at every hour for one fixed monthly fee. Hiring still wins for judgment work, refunds, exceptions and complaints, which is why the best answer is usually AI for the volume and people for the decisions.

The number most people get wrong: coverage

Your customers do not message in office hours. They message after dinner, on Friday, during Ramadan nights. A hire covers their shift and nothing else.

CountryStandard maximum working weekHires needed to cover 168 hoursPaid annual leave on top
Saudi Arabia48 hours, 36 in Ramadan for Muslim employees3.5, or 4.7 in RamadanAt least 21 days, 30 after five years
UAE8 hours a day or 48 a week3.530 days after one year of service
Lebanon48 hours under the Labour Code3.515 days after one year

So the honest comparison is never "one salary against one subscription". It is either three and a half salaries against one subscription, or one salary plus a promise to customers that nobody answers after six. Most brands quietly choose the second, and pay for it in carts that go cold overnight. We looked at what that silence costs in what happens when your store gets more messages than your team can read.

What a hire costs beyond the salary

Every country in the region adds employer costs that never appear on the offer letter. Checked on official or published legal sources on 3 October 2026; this is a guide, not payroll advice.

Saudi Arabia. For a Saudi employee, the employer pays GOSI annuities at 9 percent for existing contributors, and GOSI's own guidance says the rate for new entrants under the new Social Insurance Law rises in half point steps to 11 percent. On top of that, 2 percent for occupational hazards, which also applies to non-Saudi employees, and 0.75 percent for SANED?locale=en_US) unemployment insurance. The Labor Law adds an end of service award of half a month's wage for each of the first five years and a full month for each year after.

United Arab Emirates. The end of service gratuity is 21 days of salary for each of the first five years and 30 days for each year after, capped at two years of wages. If you hire an Emirati, the private sector minimum wage is AED 6,000 a month from 1 January 2026.

Lebanon. A published legal guide to Lebanese employment rights lists employer NSSF contributions of 8.5 percent for end of service indemnity, 6 percent for family allowances and 8 percent for sickness and maternity, about 22.5 percent in total before wage ceilings. The private sector minimum wage was raised to LBP 28 million a month in mid 2025.

Then add what no law lists: recruiting, the weeks of training before a new hire answers confidently, a manager's time, a laptop and a phone line, and starting over when they leave.

Run it for your own store

An illustrative method, not a measured result. Plug in your own salary figure; we are deliberately not quoting market salaries, because they vary too much by city and seniority to be useful.

  1. Monthly salary of one customer service hire: call it S.
  2. Employer on-costs: in Lebanon, roughly 22.5 percent NSSF from the guide above. In Saudi Arabia, for a Saudi hire, about 11.75 percent rising toward 13.75 percent with GOSI, plus the end of service accrual. In the UAE, the gratuity alone accrues at 21 days of salary for every year of the first five.
  3. Coverage: multiply by 3.5 if you want every hour covered, or accept that one hire means one shift.
  4. Hidden overhead: recruitment, training and management time, honestly estimated.

A single Lebanese hire on salary S therefore costs about 1.225 S a month before overhead, and round the clock cover costs about 4.3 S. Compare that with a fixed monthly AI fee plus Meta's own message charges, and the gap is usually not close. To price the AI side properly, line by line, see what AI customer service really costs.

What an AI does better, and what a person does better

JobAI on WhatsAppA trained person

Meta's WhatsApp Business messaging policy allows automated replies in the 24 hour customer service window but requires prompt, clear and direct escalation to a person. So the realistic design is not AI instead of people. It is AI for the volume and your existing team for the moments that need judgment, which usually means you do not need the extra hire at all.

Why plumcut is built for exactly this decision

Most AI tools hand you software and leave the work of running it to you, which quietly brings the hire back: somebody has to write the flows, update the answers and fix what breaks. plumcut removes that too.

  • Done for you. plumcut learns your brand, builds plum around your products, prices and policies, connects it to your store, and runs and improves it. Nobody on your team operates a tool.
  • Every hour, every message. plum answers, sells and books on your WhatsApp at 3 a.m. and on a Friday afternoon, in Arabic and English.
  • Hands over at the right moment. Tricky and sensitive conversations go to your team with the context attached, so the people you have spend their time on decisions, not on copy and paste.
  • One fixed number. A one time setup fee, then a fixed monthly fee in wide bands with a ceiling, and Meta and AI usage at cost. No gratuity, no social insurance, no leave cover, no notice period.
  • Live in about two weeks.

There are cases where hiring is the better first move. If your messages are mostly unique judgment calls rather than repeated questions, or you are still agreeing internally on what the right answers are, a person will serve you better today, and we wrote the case for waiting in when your business is ready for AI customer service. For everyone else drowning in the same questions, the cheaper hire is not a person.

What to do this week

  1. Count the messages that arrived outside working hours in the last two weeks, and how long each waited.
  2. Write down the fully loaded monthly cost of the hire you are considering, using the steps above, not the salary.
  3. Mark last week's questions as repeatable or judgment. The repeatable share is what an AI takes off the new hire's desk.
  4. Ask plum for a fixed monthly quote and put it next to the number from step 2.

Questions people also ask

Is an AI chatbot cheaper than hiring a customer service employee?

For repetitive questions, almost always, because the comparison is not one salary against one subscription. A week has 168 hours and the labour laws of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Lebanon all cap a standard working week at 48 hours, so covering every hour takes about three and a half full time people before leave. Each one also carries employer costs such as social insurance and an end of service payment. An AI answers at any hour for a monthly fee. It is not cheaper for judgment work, such as complaints and refunds, which should stay with a person.

How many employees do you need to answer WhatsApp 24 hours a day?

At least three and a half full time employees, and more in practice. A week is 168 hours and the standard maximum working week is 48 hours in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Lebanon, so 168 divided by 48 gives 3.5 people just to keep one seat filled. Annual leave, sick days and breaks push the real number higher. Most small brands do not do this, which is why messages sent at night or on weekends wait until the morning.

What does a customer service hire really cost an employer in Saudi Arabia?

More than the salary. For a Saudi employee the employer pays GOSI contributions for annuities, 9 percent for existing contributors and rising in steps toward 11 percent for new entrants under the new Social Insurance Law, plus 2 percent for occupational hazards and 0.75 percent for SANED unemployment insurance. The Labor Law also requires an end of service award of half a month's wage for each of the first five years, at least 21 days of paid annual leave, and a working week capped at 48 hours.

Can AI completely replace customer service staff?

No, and it should not try. AI is reliable for questions with one correct answer, such as stock, prices, delivery areas, order status and policies, which make up most of the volume in a typical store. Refunds, exceptions and complaints where the business was at fault need a person with the authority to decide. Meta's WhatsApp messaging policy also requires a prompt, clear and direct way to reach a human when replies are automated. The usual result is a smaller team doing better work, not no team.

How much does plumcut cost compared with hiring?

plumcut charges a one time setup fee and then a fixed monthly fee set by what the solution does, stepping up in wide traffic bands to a ceiling, with Meta messaging and AI usage billed at cost with no margin. There is no gratuity, social insurance, leave cover or recruitment cost, and it answers at every hour of the week. The exact figure depends on the solution and is quoted on a short call, so compare it against the fully loaded cost of the hires it would replace, not against one salary.

Don't take our word for it

Have a question? Ask plum.
See it for yourself

Before you post that job ad, ask plum what it would take off the new hire's desk, and what it would cost per month, fixed.
